Structure and headings
One first-level heading per page and no skipped heading levels, so screen reader users can navigate a long page by its structure rather than reading it end to end.
This site is built to be usable by people with a wide range of vision, hearing, motor and cognitive abilities, which matters more than usual here: a good proportion of the people reading it have hands that are not working as well as they used to.

THE STANDARD
The target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at level AA, which is the standard generally applied to Australian government and health information websites.
Accessibility is treated as part of building each page rather than as an audit at the end, and the checks below are run on every page before it is published.
WHAT IS IN PLACE
01
One first-level heading per page and no skipped heading levels, so screen reader users can navigate a long page by its structure rather than reading it end to end.
02
Every image carries alternative text.
03
Interactive elements are reachable by keyboard and show a visible focus ring. This matters particularly for people with reduced hand function, which is a common reason to be reading this site at all.
04
Entrance animations are switched off on phones, and the browser and operating system reduced-motion setting is respected for them. Pages reflow to a single column on small screens with no horizontal scrolling.
KNOWN LIMITATIONS
Publishing a list of known gaps is more useful than claiming there are none.
Hover effects on cards are decorative and carry no information. They are switched off when your browser or operating system asks for reduced motion.
This site has not been tested by someone who uses a screen reader every day. The structure has been checked programmatically, which is not the same thing. If something does not work for you, telling us is the fastest way to get it fixed.
Documents linked from other organisations, including published research, are outside this site's control and may not meet the same standard.
If you hit something that does not work for you, that is worth telling us about. Reports of specific problems are the fastest way for them to get fixed.
